SCARBOROUGH YOUTH PHOTOVOICE EXHIBITION:

Scarborough Youth PhotoVoices Photo Exhibit, Morningside Library

Thank you to everyone who attended and our funders, ArtReach and City of Toronto Cultural Hotspot for their generous support. Here is what our youth participants and mentors said about the PhotoVoices program:

“I liked how we looked at the elements of photography in photos taken by other people before we took our own pictures. It gave me a lot of inspirations and great tips to enhanced my photos and add more meaning to it.”

Iman, participant

“I felt that I learnt a lot about photography, form and contrasts. I met new people and develop a new hobby for photography since the workshop. I enjoyed taking photos everyday using the knowledge I gained from the workshop and I really liked exploring my own neighbourhood to take pictures.”

Azaan, participant

“I like how we were able to go to the Guild to take pictures, it was really beautiful and we were able to take great shots. For next time we can explore various places like downtown to take pictures.  Overall the experience is wonderful and I hope to use it in the future.”

Silma, participant

“It was a good experience that expanded my knowledge and l love the exhibition and photo display. It looked great in the library. The workshops were educational and learnt many skills like responsibility and time management. I was able to make new friends and work with different people.”

Isha, participant

"I thoroughly enjoyed working with the youth on this project. It was great getting to know the youth better through their commitment to the project, their photographs and their artist statements. Thanks to the generous support of the City of Toronto Cultural Hotspot, in many ways this project served as a pilot program.  I’m looking forward to improving the program based on the youths’ feedback and suggestions. I’d love to see this program evolve into a 6-week program made available to more youth across Scarborough. "

Diana Nazareth, mentor

"Scarborough Youth Photo Voices is an incredible program spearheaded by Diana Nazareth; I had the great opportunity to work with Diana as a photo assistant to mentor the youth on the basics of photography, and as an emerging artist myself, I was able to exchange creative ideas with the participants and remain inspired by the stories of their work. I hope Diana continues to foster a learning culture where youth can utilize photography as a tool to either formulate or document compelling visual narratives. I believe art programs such as SYPV has the power to motivate and shape the next generation of changemakers."

Aniqa Rahman, peer mentor
