about the artist contributors

Aaishah Khawaja

I’m currently a high school senior, and I enjoy painting in my free time. From the workshop, I found a form of self-care is taking time for yourself.

Abrar Quazi

My name is Abrar Quazi and I am 19 years old.  I have always had a passion for design and art as it has been an outlet for me to express my personality and thoughts. When creating works of art, I see the canvas as a medium for me to make a statement, commentate on certain topics, and express how I am feeling at the moment. I am currently studying Architecture as I love how the field is design-oriented and is not very binary as it allows room for creativity and out-of-the-box thinking.

Azaan Cheema

Hi! My name is Azaan Cheema, and I am seventeen years old. I like acrylic painting and pottery. I have been involved in HLA since 2008, and I’m so happy to be a part of this program because I learned many different things from it. I hope that I can be a part of many more projects and teams to set a positive example for my family, friends, and community.

Iman Cheema

My name is Iman Cheema and I love experimenting with various art forms, such as painting, drawing, photography, and graphic design. I am currently pursuing Computer Engineering, and I hope to combine my passion for technology and art to help others. On the side, I like to work with several nonprofit organizations and clubs to create a positive impact on my community and peers.

Isha Cheema

Hi, I’m Isha! I’m a computer engineering student (I know very out of character) who also loves to dabble in different artistic mediums like painting and journaling. I have recently developed a new love for art after being a project manager for my own community arts program! In my free time, I enjoy playing games, reading, and diving into new hobbies.

Mahnoor Cheema

Hi I’m Mahnoor! I am a reader, an art enthusiast, and I like to paint and draw in my free time. I have been a part of HLA since I was 12 years old and attended a lot of workshops and worked with various forms of art. Recently, I was a project manager for the SMART program (also under HLA) which delved into self care through art journaling.

Mariam Arif

Hi! My name is Mariam Arif, and I’m currently a grade 11 high school student. I enjoy painting, baking and volunteering in the community.

Rochelle Mascoe

My name is Rochelle Murray, a frontline worker that supports individuals with intellectual disabilities. Working through this pandemic can be overwhelming and impactful to our mental health. I discovered the importance of self care. Through these times, it’s important to check in with yourself to make sure you’re OK. For me, unplugging is self is my self care.

Salmina Sabah

I am currently studying social work and am in the social justice and diversity stream. I have lived in East Scarborough for many years and am interested in community organizing and healing. These days, I'm listening to a lot of BTS and spending time with my mom.

Silma Manwar

My name is Silma Manwar. I am currently 19 years old and attend the University of Waterloo pursuing a degree in Mathematics. I am originally from a small country besides India called Bangladesh and lived in Scarborough for the past few years. Art/Painting has been a hobby since I was a child. A medium of art that intrigued me the most is acrylic painting. What I love about it is that I can express myself more than I can with words as well as in a creative manner.

Subha Manwar

Hello! My name is Subha and I am currently a grade 10 student residing in the Scarborough neighbourhood. I enjoy creating and am passionate about visual and written artworks! I like to connect and engage in my community via volunteerism. I hope to make an impact with my artworks regarding one’s identity and self-actualization!

Zeni Shariff

I am mostly a self taught artist who loves vibrant colors, open spaces and to be free.  I was born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and grew up about a five minute walking distance from the Indian Ocean.  The rhythm of the Indian Ocean is like breathing for me washing away all the pain and renewing me with new energy every day.
